This past week, things got serious on Real Housewives of Atlanta when Kenya Moore had the cameras document her scary brush with breast cancer. Kenya's now opening up about it to Ebony.com, hoping that by allowing viewers in on her story they might take more precaution than she herself did.
Kenya tells Ebony that "Ultimately, I knew that it would help people" by showing her story, and notes that she "made a huge mistake when I first found out about my lump. I went and got checked out from my doctor’s orders and had my mammogram, but I had such a horrible experience that I didn’t come back for the results. I just got scared. I was by myself and I didn’t tell anyone. I kept it all to myself. I never told my aunt, I never told my boyfriend, I never told my cousins, my best friend. I didn’t tell anybody."
Finally, Kenya's aunt persuaded her to get a biopsy, and she held off on finding out the results until a day that she was taping because she knew "it’s going to save peoples’ lives."
"I wanted it to be authentic: I didn’t get the results before I did it on camera, so when my doctor told me what the news was, it was the first time I heard it, because I wanted the viewer to know what it’s like to actually go through it and know that it’s OK. That no matter what, it’s going to be OK. You just need to get early detection and early treatment because that’s what’s going to save lives."
Still, a basic mammogram wasn't the end game for the whole process. "It was my second mammogram since I was 41, but the lump was not found from my mammogram, it was found from my doctor’s examination. Even when I went back to get the mammogram, they still couldn’t see it, and then I had to do an ultrasound, and that when they found two. I had to go back again when I saw my new doctor and went over the same process all over again, and they actually found three lumps. It was pretty scary."
Thankfully the lumps were not cancer, but now Kenya knows to stick to a strict schedule of checkups every six months to ensure the lumps don't progress into cancer. She's also urging fans to take a different course than she did, saying they should "go get checked if you have any kinds of breast cancer in your family. Don’t wait until you’re 40, maybe go at 35. Do the self-examination. Because mine was detectable from the mammogram, you could feel the actual lump. I didn’t take it seriously, so I’m not what to do. This process taught me that was the wrong course of action."
Kenya is the most dramatic person I have ever seen in my life. She needs to get professional help. Why would someone as beautiful and successful as she is chase after a man like she did? ...Walter. She tried to force the man to marry her. No man likes that. They want it to be their idea. They want to work for you not have you throw your self at them. Then when it is over run from him and avoid making a scene ...... Are you really so starved for that much for attention? You should show you have more class, that you are a woman that has it together. Don't run after him like a maniac. Ignore him, go on about your business, laugh, talk to friends, pretend he doesn't matter. If he has a date and you are forced to be close.. shake there hand and tell them it was nice to meet.....now please excuse me. It makes you classy and intriguing. Stop the Drama.
Kenya, I am so happy that you had a benign result. I am not quite that lucky. I was diagnosed in January with leukemia. The term for my condition is CLL, chronic lymphosetic leukemia. The cancer I have is also in my lymph nodes. I have just started chemo and sometimes I think I am ignoring my condition or pretending its not true. I dont think I have wrapped my head around it yet. But again, I am so glad you got the blessed results.
Also I want to comment on Phaedra, she is being awful to you. I give you props for being able to walk away from her, she needs to have the smug slapped out of her and cut down to size. I dont know why she finds it so funny to be so ugly to you. I think you are in the right, in every way. Dont be sad about Walter, he treated you crappy. He isnt worth the time of day.
she held off on getting the results until she was on camera because "it’s going to save peoples’ lives." that's awesome! want to be even more awesome kenya - have bravo film you while you donate your earnings to st. jude's childrens hospital or cancer research center of america - you can even get statistics on how many lives are actually saved by these intitutions! you go girl!
First off, glad that Kenya got good news on this scare. God Bless. Second, I just want to say this: you can say whatever you want about Kenya's behavior, but Kenya has done more Public Service for woment on this one episode than possibly all the other RHOA combined. What she share was not a fluffy cosmetic procedure, a song recording session, or the unveiling of a new dining room (pehlease!!). It was REAL, it was RELEVANT, and it was IMPORTANT. She probably saved lifes by sharing that moment. Kenya, hold your head high, keep twirling and fabulous!! God Bless!
I thank you so much Kenya for airing the truth of the matter, that helps and reminds me that I need to stick to taking care of myself better, especially when you mentioned about letting go of all the stressors like (worrying what others say or think about you, worrying if you'll get married or not, etc.) I instantly related to those topics alone and said to myself that this messge is for me!
I have been eating better, exercising, and relieving myself of alot of worry recently, and within the next couple of weeks I promise to go get examined, I'll be back to give updates, thanks again Kenya...........
ps. Cynthia is doing the charity event, Kandi is going gospel, NeNe is inspiring success (acting), Phaedra is inspiring more people (myself) to keep it real more, and Porsha is inspiring young girls to continue their education because of the things she says makes one want to get, keep, and use their knowledge!
I mean you all are doing positive things, even if not aware, but nontheless I'm happy I watched this episode, thanks and God bless........
Well, let me first say girlie that it is a blessing that your test were found to be benign, not all results come back that way......with that said, please don't try to set yourself up to go on a promo tour to champion mammograms to stay in the public's eye.........ok that wasn't really nice but missy, you really need to start OWNING your OWN Shit!.......and stop trying to be the victim In EVERYTHING in your life.....don't talk about that man Walter.......didn't you bring him to the party?.........don't ASSUME (Ass out of you & me, remember that?) that Everybody thinks you're hot because you were Miss USA.......ok and? whatt?(Thanks RuPaul for that).......jeez baby, stop trying to be relevant and do positive things all of the time (not just when you think someone is looking) and don't tell people about it, just do it.................if a man acts like he's not into you and then (after you keep badgering him) says he's not into you.........stay away from him........if you want a baby, have one or not...........but before you do anything....sit down somewhere and fix YOURSELF.............you can't be "jack" for nobody, until you've got yourself in check..................................get off that reality show......you came on a "hot mess" and irregardless what you do from here on in....that's all folks are gonna remember
For those women who are truly frightened and/or battling cancer I hope you apologize. You are such a proven liar and there is no doubt in my mind that you staged this entire cancer scare because you knew you were in trouble with the viewers because of your narcissitic nasty behavior and you were looking for sympathy. In our home we change the channel when you come on the show. We simply can' take one more minute of your abusive nature toward all the women on the show. You need a reality check - you are not better than these women - you are so far beneath them and yet act like you're doing everyone a favor to allow them to be in your presence. You've been proven to be a liar with Walter (how desperate you must have been to get on the show), you're a thief with no integrity, honesty or ethics by stealing the booty idea from Phaedro and Apollo. Any businesswomen, as you claim to be, would have had everything understood and in writing prior to any project being started. You took it upon yourself to get the dstribution deal without taliing with Phaedra and Apollo - so you consider that good ethical honest business? You claim to be a multi-million dollar producer and yet can't name one film. All you are in a desperate despicable woman who wants camera time.
Mag Mag a little harsh don't you think? Regardless if the scare was staged or not it prompts others to get checked and cared for regarding this, attacking another person's character is not the key, it is no more professional as you claim she improperly impersonates, this sounds a bit much like hatred to me, you know like haterism? Cut the girl some slack are they not all on the show to get camera time? Only one I have not seen behave in such stereotypical manner (derogetory) is Kandi, but come on now its drama, a drama show with drama queens for drama lovers, seekers, and viewers! I'm not coming down on you but at the same time I dislike what I am reading here, because the pot calls the kettle black daily when clearly if the pot looked in the mirror he/she would see that it is not white.......
How could Kenya "stage" a cancer scare? BRAVO would not have filmed that ordeal with her Dr. if it was staged... c'mon now. I don't like Kenya's antics and behavior anymore than you or the next person, but having a cancer scare like that is no joke and whatever her motives may have been to have it filmed brought awareness to a lot of women to take their health seriously and to have regular mammograms. I know it did for me.
Ms. Moore, I'm so happy you're going to be okay. Two of my sisters had similar concerns; one had an agressive type and my other sisters' diagnosis was benign. They're still here looking fabulous and so are YOU!
Women should treat their breast like their teeth...a check up once a year in their birth month.
You were looking GREAT in Dubai woman!
I love you for sharing your story and helping to save lives. There are so many people that live and breathe hatred and when there is something positive they have nothing to say. All your other blogs have hundreds of comments most trying to tear you down.
Keep being you Kenya. You are a remarkable woman and I hope that you continue to focus on yourself and helping others.
Thanks Kenya for your courageous sharing of your situation. It hope it's helpful to many many women. May you continue to be healthy in the future.
Kenya, my heart was breaking for you when you were waiting for your results! I wasn't so lucky when I got mine at the age of 42. That was 3 years ago and my children were only 10 & 11 at the time. I cried with you because It was reliving the worst time of my life all over again! I"m glad Bravo showed what you were going through. It makes you realize what's important, who's important and what never mattered to begin with! I now live every day to the fullest & I think you will be doing the same. None of us are guaranteed a tomorrow! With that having been said, congratulations on your new outlook!! Remember that the next time petty drama surrounds you!!
Mish44 Thank you so much! :) I was so happy Bravo decided to air her journey through this. To many women think they shouldn't go for a mammo because 40 is to young. Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth.
truly brave & very 'shero' of you to open up and share your story Kenya!
so happy that things ended on a healthy note for you.
now that you've shared this, i will definitely schedule a mammogram soon.
you and i are the same age and you're absolutely right, this ain't nothin' to sleep on!
let's get tested ladies!!! :-D
You have certainly helped by showing your biopsy - I hate that you feel that everything's going wrong right now, Kenya. This was a very good thing that you did for other women, and good will come back to you. Happy Gal-entine's Day!
